What is Gangrene ? (definition of Gangrene)
Decaying of foot or hole in foot in general, but in actual decaying or death of tissues of any part of body like fingers, limbs, toes, muscles or any organs due to insufficient or no supply of blood to that part of body is known as Gangrene.

It is basically the spoiling and death of certain tissues due to lack of blood flow and accumulation of bacteria in in the affected area of the body. It can actually affect any small or large part of the body. It is a very serious and deadly disease as per doctors. Dry Gangrene : Dry Gangrene is characterized by dry shriveled(wrinkles due to loss of moisture) skin and may be brown or purplish blue to black in color. It is more common and associated with blood vessels diseases like Diabetes or arthritis or atherosclerosis(build up of fats, cholestrol on artery walls).
Wet Gangrene : it generally involves a bacterial infection in the affceted tissues. It may develop a severe burn or trauma where a body part is crushed or squeezed, this can rapidly cut off blood supply to the affected area causing tissue death and increase risk of infection. Infection fro wet gangrene can spread quickly throughout the body and can be fatal, making it a very serious and life threatening condition if not treated quicly and timely. It often occurs in people with diabetes.
Gas Gangrene : It is rare but very dangerous and occurs when infection develop deep inside the body such such as muscles or organs usually as a result of trauma. It is caused by the infection with the bacterium clostridium perfringens which produces toxins that releases gas. It develops in an injury or surgical wound where blood circulation got depleted, gas gangrene can be life threatening.
Internal Gangrene : this type of gangrene affects internal parts like intestine (large or small), appendix, golbladder etc. internal gangrene occurs when there is a blockage of blood flow to any internal organ.

Diagnosis
Blood tes to look for the presence of certain bacteria and other germs , an abnormally elevated white blood cell count usually indicates the presence of infection.
Imaging tests includes CT scan, X-ray or a magnetic resouce imaging scan to view the body structure such as informal organs, blood vessels and bones and check the extent to which gangrene has spread.
